An executive was looking at job opportunities outside her industry.
She asked me to tell her the truth about her resume. “Is it OK?”
I gave my usual answer:
“Your resume is fine. Most resumes are fine. But you want a resume that’s more than fine, right?”
And I added a part I hadn’t put words to until recently:
“I know what I demand of myself when writing executive resumes.
If your DIY resume must compete with the strategically branded and tailored resume I’ve created for my other clients – you don’t stand a chance.”
Was I being arrogant?
Maybe.
But she genuinely wanted to know what resumes look like at the executive level in 2024.
I was truthful with her, and she appreciated it.
Look, sometimes we’re not in the right mindset to hear this type of frank feedback. We might be struggling at work, feeling burnt out, or anxious about the future, and feedback like this might overwhelm us and even make things feel worse.
I offer a program called Resume Audit. I’m selective about who I offer it to because not everyone appreciates or is ready for honest, direct feedback about improving their job search via a stand-out resume.
Those who work with me value my expertise as an expert who studies hiring trends and engages regularly with executive recruiters to understand their decision-making processes and preferences.
If you’re applying for roles and getting limited responses, you might benefit from a Resume Audit. Be prepared to learn where your resume needs work and how to make the changes.
